A Guide to the Best Outdoor Study Spots in Preston

The countdown to your university adventure has truly begun, and it'll soon be time to start thinking about moving to Preston. Moving to a new city brings a rush of pure adrenaline, but navigating the routes on arrival day can feel daunting. If you are packing up the car or booking your tickets to head toward UCLan, getting your travel strategy sorted early changes everything. We want your transition to university to be completely seamless, so here is your definitive guide to reaching your new northern home. How Do You Get to Preston by Road? You can reach Preston easily via the extensive Lancashire motorway network. The city connects brilliantly to major routes from every direction, ensuring a straightforward drive on move-in day. If you are coming up from the South, including London, Birmingham, or the Midlands, stick to the M6 northbound. You will want to exit at Junction 31 to head straight into the city centre. Travelling down from the North, such as Cumbria or Scotland, requires the M6 southbound. From there, you can exit at Junction 32, which drops you onto the A6 into north Preston, or stick with Junction 31. Drivers approaching from the East can utilise the M65 westbound, which runs directly toward the city. Alternatively, the A59 offers a direct route from Clitheroe and Yorkshire. If your starting point is Manchester, the M61 northbound links you directly to the M6 just south of Preston, making it a quick forty-five-minute drive. Coming from Liverpool involves taking the M58 eastbound and merging onto the M6 northbound, which keeps your travel time to just under an hour. What Are the Best Public Transport Routes? Preston Railway Station is the best public transport option for students, operating as a massive hub on the West Coast Main Line. The station sits within easy reach of key student spots and offers direct connections across the country. If you travel from London Euston, direct trains get you here in two to two and a half hours. Services from Manchester are incredibly fast, taking only forty to fifty minutes, while direct trains from Liverpool Lime Street arrive in around an hour. Frequent direct trains also run regularly from Birmingham New Street and major Scottish cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. Do not forget to buy a 16-25 Railcard before you book, as it instantly slices one third off your rail fares. Coaches offer another fantastic budget-friendly alternative. Preston Bus Station serves as a major regional transport hub. Both National Express and Megabus run frequent, low-cost long-distance services into the city from London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool. This is highly efficient if you are moving with heavy luggage and want to avoid dragging suitcases through train stations. Which Airports Serve the Preston Area? Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport are the closest airports to Preston, both located exactly forty miles away. They provide straightforward onward links for international students. Manchester Airport is generally the simplest option for your journey. The airport features its own dedicated train station right inside the terminal building. Direct trains to Preston depart every twenty to thirty minutes, meaning you can sit back and relax for a smooth one-hour journey straight to the city. If you land at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the route is slightly different. Step outside the terminal and hop onto the 500 Airport Express bus. This takes you directly to Liverpool Lime Street station, where you can board a direct train to Preston. More Tips For a Smooth Arrival Pack your belongings into heavy-duty bags rather than massive boxes, as bags are far easier to wedge into car boots and carry upstairs. Keep a small survival kit easily accessible containing your passport, tenancy documents, phone chargers, and a bottle of water. Share your estimated arrival time with your flatmates beforehand so you can celebrate your first evening together in the city. Moving is a massive milestone, but treating it as the start of a great adventure keeps the stress away. Take your time, plan your stops, and get ready to settle into your new room. If you need to double-check your check-in slot or look at property maps, visit the Urban Student Life website to get completely prepared.
