History Of The Mojito Cocktail

The exact origins of the mojito are up for debate, although we do know that it can be traced back to Havana, Cuba.

Some trace back the classic cocktail to 1586, where local South American Indian’s are said to have mixed rum, mint, lime, and sugar cane syrup as a medicine to help treat tropical illnesses.

No matter what the true origins of the mojito are, there’s no arguing that the cocktail is one of the most popular drinks globally.

It’s sure to be around for more centuries to come!

1. Classic Mojito

On a hot summer’s day when the sun is shining and the good vibes are flowing, you can’t go wrong with a nice refreshing mojito.

For our first recipe, we’ve chosen a classic mojito consisting of Cuban ingredients: fresh mint leaves, white rum, sugar, zesty lime and cooling soda water, or sparkling water.

To create this classic tipple yourself, you’ll need to add your fresh mint to the bottom of a cocktail shaker and use a special bartending tool called a muddler to release the mint’s oils.

If you don’t have a muddler, you could use a wooden spoon instead.

Next, you need to add your rum, lime juice, simple syrup and a handful of ice, before shaking your mixture.

Now strain your drink into a glass filled up with ice, and top with some cooling soda water or sparkling water, before garnishing with lime slices and more mint.
