The Best Freshers' Week Events in Newcastle-under-Lyme
Nine days. Ten events. One new postcode to learn. If you’re moving into Orme House, Hassells Bridge Apartments, Keele House, or One London Road this September, Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Freshers’ Week will be the backdrop for meeting everyone you’ll spend the next year with.
When does it start?
Keele SU’s own Freshers 26 Pass is valid from Saturday 19th September to Sunday 27th September, and that’s the real shape of the week. Term One begins on the 21st, but teaching doesn’t start until the week of the 28th, so you’ve got time to unpack, find the nearest shop, and go to more than one event without your first seminar suffering for it.
What happens, day by day?
Saturday 19th September opens the week with the Freshers Welcome Party at Keele SU, the first night you’ll spend in a room full of people who are just as unsure of the room as you are. Sunday’s quieter: the Big Freshers’ Pub Quiz is on from 7 pm to 10 pm, a good option if loud clubs aren’t your opening move.
Then comes Monday 21 September, the busiest day on the calendar. The Freshers Fair fills Keele SU from 10 am to 4 pm, free to walk into, packed with every society and sports club worth knowing about. By night, you’ve got a real choice: Keele SU’s own Freshers Pop Party, or a trip into town for F*CK ME It’s Freshers, the independently organised Hanley Freshers night at The Foyer on Hassell Street, from 10 pm to 2.30 am.
Tuesday and Wednesday are Club and Society Sign-Up Days, 10 am to 4 pm both days, the practical follow-through once you’ve slept on what you actually want to commit to. Wednesday night brings BONK Beach Party, new to the calendar this year. Thursday’s Discover Staffordshire Day is the week’s one daytime reset, a free market rather than another late night. Friday 25th September is Freshers Urban Night, and it all closes out across the final weekend, 26th to 28th September, with the End of Freshers’ Party.
Is the Freshers Pass worth buying?
If you’re planning on more than three or four big nights, yes. The Keele Freshers 26 Pass covers free entry to seven flagship events, valid from 19th to 27th September: £37.50 while the early bird tier lasts, £42.50 for Keele students after that, £47.50 for guests. Scouting For Girls Live (£15) and Bongo’s Bingo (£3) sit outside the pass as separate add-ons. Buy it before the early bird window shuts. Seven nights for £37.50 doesn’t come back around.
What locals and second years do differently
The Foyer is a short walk from Orme House and Hassells Bridge Apartments, so you only need comfortable shoes for Hanley Freshers night, not a taxi booking. Go to the Fair before you commit to anything at Sign-Up Days: a day to think it over is the difference between joining five societies you’ll actually turn up to and five you won’t. Discover Staffordshire Day is worth your time even if markets aren’t usually your scene: it’s free, daytime, and a break after three nights out.
Nine days is a long stretch by any measure. The students still standing for the closing weekend are, almost without exception, the ones who skipped at least one night in the middle.
